Seventeen years ago settlement of Crown lands in the King Country was a thing that happened on very rare occasions, and when it did take place they were usually thrown open as unsurveyed lands. In the Whareorina and Maungamangero districts a large area of land was taken up by settlers on those conditions, with the result that very few remained on the land on account of the want of roads. One settler, however, Mr S. Leitch, did and although there for many years is still without access of any kind to his place. His experiences in getting stock to his farm have been very trying. Mr Leitch states that the only roads he has to his place is a track through the bush which he cut himself. Only £lO has been spent for roading, which Mr Leitch advanced, and that was not refunded for six months.
