ENTERTAINMENTS.
EMPIRE LIVINO PICTURES. The Empire Picture Company paid their usual weekly visit to Te Kuiti on Monday night an I were greeted by the largest hou-'e since their visits commenced. The pictures, as usual, were of the best, and were screened without a dicker or blemish. Tin's company is becoming linnly established and their weekly visits are locked forward to with pleasure, and the popularity is well earned because thev show nothing but the best. Comic, scenic, educational. etc. studies were shown and the audience w-re well pleased with their evening's recreation. The company promise another special programme next Monday evening. BELLE CKOME COMPANY. The Belle Cronio Company gave a delightful concert last night at the Town Hull, Te Kuiti. To say there was not a dull moment is to repeat a trite but appropriate statement. It was a capital show, full of music, mirth and melody. Without referring in detail to the artistes, Miss Ethel Richards, a high soprano with a cultivated voice of great range and quality, deserves special mention, and Mr ,1. Llewellyn, wuh his powerful baritone voice, was also greatly appreciated. Will Hughes was a comical wonder and the Cronies generally were excellent. WIRTH'S CIRCUS. The bill boards of the town bear the legend, "Have you seen Li/.zieV" The stranger unwittingly inquires as to the identity of the lady, only to ascertain that the inquiry refers to the huge hippopotamus on exhibition at Wirth's circus. Lb'.r.ie, the new pet of the circus, gets as much attention as a first-born child, or a probable Melbourne Cup winner. In the morning she gets a dishful of carefullyselected corn, to which is added a quantity of sliced turnips, which have already been soaking in hot water an hour. After this meal, she looks for her all-day bath, prepared in an adjoining tank. Great care is taken that the water is not too hot nor too cold. About 4 o'clock each afternoon she gets her second feeding. At about this time Lizize becomes restive, possibly because she is hungry. After this meal she is further indulged in an armful of hay, and then retires for the night upon a straw bed, specially prepared each day. The "lady" delights in potatoes, and reliishes the addition of some of the tubers in each meal; in fact, she becomes more tractable if she gets a plentiful supply of them. Care is taken that they are well washed before dishing up. When these animals become excited the strange phenomenon of the blood-sweat appears on their skns. The pale chcocolate colour of her hide becomes densely covered with globular red spots, which, upon rubbing off, will leave stains like blood upon the cloth. Wirths' circus will appear in Te Kuiti on March 7th.
