About 8.20 last night a new fourroomed house, owned and occupied by Mr John Carr, builder, To Kuiti, caught lire and was luirned to the ground. The alarm was given during the performance at the Town Hall. and caused some commotion amongst the spectators. Mr Carr was present and on going our icarno. to his surprise that Cue house was his own. He lives alone there and for some weeks past has had no ore in the house proper, but did in-; cooking in a detached lean-to. lie lighted one that night to make his tea, but left the house about 7.:h> p.m. under the impression that all was safe. How the lire originated is a mystery. The tire brigade turned up smartly in full force, hut under the circumstances could do nothing but see that the tiro spread m> further. As it was, the fence dividing tire next cottage, caught lire, and had to bo pulled down. The house was i istired in the State Fire office for ami the furniture in the : ame odice for anoo.
