LOCAL AND GENERAL NEWS.

The time for receiving nominations for the Mokauiti sports at Aria has been extended to Friday, February 24th.

A special meeting of the Boy Scouts committee will be held in the "Chronicle" office on Monday evening next at 8 o'clock to consider the relations of the Boy Scouts and the Cadet corps. A harvest thanksgiving service will be held in St. Luke's Church next Sunday. Some excellent metalling work is being done by the Roads Department on Te Kuiti-Awakino road. The metal is being blinded and it is expected that a good, though short section will be completed before the wet season sets in.

I The loose metal on Te Kuiti-Hanga-tiki road was the subject of critical conversation the other evening. U I is felt that raetai .merely dropped loose I on the surface of the road serves jittle ' good purpose in summer time, at all i events. If it could be blinded, all ; would be well. { Gentle, soft, refreshing rain fell | on Monday, the first recorded since j January 21st, and only equivalent of ! six points. In all, since the New ! Year, we have only had 1.04 inches of ! rain. Last year, it might be menI tioned, we had about 8 inches in the ■ same period. The weather has cleared ! again, and looks settled for a fine i spell. At Monday night's meeting of the Wailomo County Council a resolution was unanimously carried strongly supporting the request of the people ! of the district for a passenger carrii age to be attached to the goods trains I between Frankton and Te Kuiti as ! expressed in the petition forwarded ! to the Minister for Railways through |MrW. T. Jennings, M.P. The Coun- ! cil requested Mr Jennings to strongly i support the petition. The Waikato - Maniapoto District ; Maori Land Board have decided to ! offer by auction in March, a number I of town sections in Te Kuiti, Taumai runui and Otorohanga. The Board | finished their sitting to-day. The ! president (Mr W. H. Bowler) and Mr i J. W. W. Seymour proceed to Taumarunui by the express to-night. Mr H. E. Lewis informs us that in future he is compelled, on account of the mail service, to leave Te Kuiti at 8 a.m. Intending passengers and those wishing to forward parcels are requested to take note. It is understood that the census enumerator appointed for the Waitomo, Waipa, Kawhia and Awakino districts is Mr C. Bowden, of Te Awamutu. Mr J. R. Graham, instructed by Messrs Young and Co., offers tomorrow afternoon at his auction rooms, a number of valuable township sections. These should appeal to business people, those wanting to build a home and investors and speculators generally. At the meeting of the Waitomo County Council, held on Monday evening last, Air P. Mora was appointed foreman to the County. Mr Mora, who comes from Christchurch, has had a large amount of experience in road work. The selection was made from a large number of applicants. The hop gardens owned by Mr White, and situated high up on the Awakino road, are just now at their loveliest. The hop blossoms hang in delicate green clusters, and are a sight worth going many miles to see. In about ten days' time they will ripen, and then comes the work of the hop pickers —to gather the blooms carefully, for ultimate sale to the makers of beer. Mr White informs us that the area in cultivation is about two acres, and that he gets the highest price given by the brewers in the Dominion. There is no prettier greenery than the hop plant, and it is strange it is not more generally grown for decorative out-door purposes.
