RELIEF OF LOCAL TAXATION.

AMENDMENT NEGATIVED. By Telegraph—Press Association.—Copyright Received February 14, 11.20 p.m. London, Yesterday. Mr W. Hayes Fisher's amendment regretting the absence of a provision for relief of local taxation, was negatived by 244 to 189. Supporters of the amendment urged that there was a steady increase of Government departmental demands on local authorities, while legislation narrowed the sources of revenue, instancing the high license duties reducing the rateable value. The loss of London ratepayers was £157,000 annually. The Government promised a small committee to study re-adjustment.
