MAIN TRUNK DISCOMFORTS.
I <o_f j SOUTHERN PRESS COMMENT. I Commenting editorially upon the i Auckland-Wellington train service the \ Lyttleton "Times" says:—"lt should ' not require a comparison between the : earnings of the North Island section ; and the South Island section of the ! railways to impress upon the MinisI ter the importance of making proper provision for the growing traffic on the Northern Main Trunk line. We have been assured by a number of people who made the journey between Wellington and Auckland during the holiday season that the ineonveni- ! ences they suffered, chiefly through overcrowding, would make them hesi- : tate about undertaking the jourivy again. One lady who welcomed the completion of the line for the relief it would give her from the agonies of sea-sickness confessed that after a return trip in the height of the seai son, she is inclined to think that a ; crowded second-class carriage on a hot summer day can inflict quite as much suffering as can any well- ; appointed coastal steamer. This ccr- '; tainly is not what the public expected, and Mv Miliar should see at once that the condition;.; are improved. Two through trains should be put on, at least during the busy season, and the carriages of both clr.sseo should be the best the service can provide. The South Island will be very glad to assist the North in obtaining 'this measure v( justice,' apart from any prickings of conscience it ought to "have in connection with the Midland tunnel."
