[|!Y Tia.KGEAI'H. PRKSS ASSOC lAXION. ] Christchurch. This Day. News from Otira shows that some trouble took place when the four o'clock shift was due to go on cn Monday. At a meeting of the local Union a deputation was appointed to wait on Mr McLean. One of the deputation was Armstrong, who was not employed by .Mr McLean, and the iatter refused to discuss matters with any person who was not one of his employees. The fact that work it the Arthur's Pass tunnel was suspended was prominently brought tefore coach passengers there, the coacn being met by a crowd cf young men apparently tunnel workers, who were sporting red ties and ribbons. Armstrong is secretary of the tu.nn, 1 workers' branch of the West Coasi General Labourers' Union. Mr McLean refused to discuss with Armstrong which was resented by ti.e Union, and negotiations were broken off.
