Mr Jordan, Crown lands valuator, came through the district a few days ago. He expressed himself satisfied with the progress it had made. Messrs Were, Thorns, and Healy fired their felled bush on the. lbth, and obtained good burns. The country of Messrs Were and Ilealy had been down two seasons. The camp of Messrs James Whelan and party adjacent to the I'omorangi road was destroyed by fire. Tents, blankets, etc., were reduced to ashes. A meeting house is being built by the natives at Marakopa. It will be opened in March. Much dissatisfaction is expressed re, the non-residence of certain settlers on their sections in the KiritehereMoeatoa district. A petition has been sent in to the chairman of the Crown Lands Board, Auckland, praying him to enforce the residential clause on all absentees. The block in question has been settled nearly seven years. It is to be hoped that the Arapao road will be widened thi» summer. The making of a dray road from Te Kuiti to the Mangaohae via the Arapae, would be of immense benefit to the back-bloekers along the route. Tradespeople and others of Te Kuiti should fry to assist settlers to get the Arapae road opened for heavy vehicular traffic. It would pa v. Mr Jack Willison, Marakopa, has almost completely recovered from his illness. A philosophical debating society will be started very shortly at the Kairimu mill, on the Marakopa river. Business concerning if is being arranged. It is rumoured that Captain Williamson, of Wait.ara, intends to cater for the Marakopa, Waitara, and Kawhia trade. The I'itoitoi does most of the local coast trade and runs between New Plymouth, Tongaporutu and Marakopa. The Rothesay was taken oil' the coast trade by its owners, the Northern Steamship Company, a month or two back.
