Tc Kuiti Racing Club's annual meeting was held on Thursday afternoon on the Club's course at Te Kumi, and proved a smooth-working, satisfactory gathering. The Club has actually been in existence three or four years, but, beyond the meeting held on the Hamilton course last year, this is the first occasion on which the races have been held on the Club's
own grounds. Viewing the course as a whole —it lies about two miles from the centre of the town —it is seen to possess admirable possibilities for the Club's purposes, and for agricultural and pastorai show work, when once put into thorough order. The grounds are very prettily situated, lying in an amphitheatre of low hills and backed, from the cast side, by patches of pretty bush. Considering that, less than a fortnight ago the course was titree and swamp, the work that has been done in that short space of time to bring it up to the condition it wa3 in for the races, must be regarded as nothing short of marvellous. The weather was perfect, the sky being overcast and thero being an absence of wind or rain. The attendance gradually increased from mid-day until it was estimated fully 900 or 1000 persons would be present, amongst whom our native friends, with their ladies dressed in the bright colours they affect, added a touch of the picturesque to the gathering. The Oparure band played during the afternoon, and its musical quality struck many visitors as equal to, it" not surpassing, that of many other local bunds. The bookmakers whose doom has been sounded as from the end of this month--were there in full force, the Club charging them a collective fee of £:\o. One of these gentry was unable to pay out on the double event, and vociferously promised to pay the money "at the post office, Te Kuiti, at ten o'clock to-morrow morning." His "clients" are still "waiting, waiting, waiting round the corner." Picnic parties vere scattered here and there about the grounds, the outing being voted a generally enjoyable one, and the sport cleanly conducted, without the slightest trace of disorder. The Club is to be congratulated upon the way in which the affair w«jnt off, due, with out doubt, to the preliminary work done by the group of hard-working officials who managed the meeting. Especial mention should be made of the valuable services rendered by Mr N. B. Lusk. The herculean task which he undertook and carried out successfully was one which few men would have been capable of, or would have undertaken, and was undoubtedly a principal factor in the success of the meeting. As is always the case, a huge amount of work falls on the secretary's shoulders, and Mr A. F. Howarth had the satisfaction of seeing the meeting go off without a single hitch. On all sides were heard compliments being paid on the way in which the meeting was being carried out. Mr J. Dalgliesh, as starter, gave every satisfaction, and the decisions of the judere, Mr G. Berry, were received with complete approval. The following are the results:—

I'OTTER'S PADDOCK TROTTING FRACAS. | iiy Tia.i-I.IIM'II. —rni'.ss association-.J Auckland, Last Night. Five men appeared at the Police Court this morning, charged that they, with certain other peasons, with the intent to prevent the running of the Auckland Trotting Club's races at Alexandra Park, assembled in such a manner and so conducted themselves, as to cause persons in the neighbourhood to fear they would disturb the peace, and simultaneously, without reasonable occasion, provoked other persons to disturb the peace tempestuously. The Magistrate, on the request of the defendant's solicitor, agreed to reduce the charge to one of committing a breach of the peace. Defendants pleaded guilty. The Magistrate said the offence could not be looked at in a mild manner. The accused had given considerable trouble, and their action might have led to bloodshed. He fined each of them £5 and costs. RACING CLUB'S PROFITS. [IIY TKI.KMtAPII. — I'RKSS ASSOCIATION.] Palmerston N., This Day. The Manawatu Racing Club made a profit of £1825 over the Christmas meeting.
