Tin; High Commissioner's cable, dated London, January 7 th, is as follows (quotations, unless otherwise specified, are average market prices on spot):—• Mutton —The market is quiet, and the stocks of New Zealand mutton on hand are light and are firmly held in a few hands. River Plate mutton is in a large supply. Canterbury mutton 4Ad, North Island 4.} d, River Plate 3Jd, Australian u£d. Lamb—The market is weakening, with signs of decline. Large shipments are arriving, and buyers are cautious. Only a few of this season's New Zealand lamb have been received, and have realised The price of Australian lamb is l^d. Beef.—The market is steady, and there is fair business doing. New Zealand hinds 3id, fores 2sd. Butter—There is better demand. Low prices have induced speculators to buy to hold in store. There are heavy supplies on hand. Colonial imports for December were 412,346 boxes, against 235,704 last year. Buyers are cautious. Choicest New Zealand butter is quoted at IOGs, Australian 102s, Danish 114s, and Argentine 104s.

Cheese—The market is firm, with more demand. White is quoted at filia, and coloured at 57s lid. llemp.—The market remains very depressed. Moderate business has been done at the lowest price. New Zealand good fair, on spot £2O os, fair grade L2O, Manila, fair current £l9. For forward shipment, New Zetland good fair, per ton £2O ss. fair grade till iss; fair current Manila £lO l°s. The output from Manila for the wsek was 2(i,000 bales.

Cocksfoot Seed- The market is steady and holders are firm, but buyera arc not keen to do business. Bright, clean New Zealand cocksfoot seed, 1 Tibs per bushel, is quoted at 7-1 a. Wheat- New Zealand long-berried 3:>s Gd per quarter of 49Glbs, shortberried 335. The market is quiet, but rather steadier.
