The prizes and trophies were all presented in Riches' sample rooms on Saturday evening, after which the bulk of the competitors took their departure for Auckland by the mail train to compete at the Auckland Rifle i Association's meeting on January 2nd j and lird. Thus ended the initial I "shoot" of our local Association. All the competitors went away very well pleased with their sport and treatment and in a real good humour with everyone. One and all spoke highly of the rango and management. The j secretary and executive were the reci- j pients of numerous congratulations j from experienced shooters, who have shot on ranges all over the world — ! inclusive of Bisley, as there were j three New Zealand Bisley "reps." j present -who stated freely that, for j an initial meeting it would be very , hard to find another meeting where j everything went off so smoothly at ■ the first time of trying. They one and all promised, not only to come next year, but would certainly en- ; deavour to bring some of their shoot- j ing friends. Other Southern "shoot- j era" sent promises of paying a visit J next year. Under these circumstances j the success of the meeting is assured | and to meet the expected increase of | visitors, the executive will have to j consider the advisability of enlarging j the trench accommodation by four or | six extra targets to increase the mini- j her to ten or twelve; this will enable j them to cope with the increase of | visitors and get the events over ex- | peditiously, otherwise they will have : to extend the meeting by a day or two, which may not lit in with other j engagements. In a conversation with the secre- I tary, who was in a very good mood i over the success of the meeting, and | in reply to a question of finances, he i informed me the Association appre- ! dated the spirit of your Te Kuiti ■ Chamber of Commerce in starting ' the Is fund, and the "King Country ; Chronicle" for keeping the project in the public view by receiving and i acknowledging the subscriptions as received; also the public spirit that j prompted the business people in the j King Country and others who contri- : übted so handsomely by trophies and : cash so that. In spite of the extraordinary expenditure incurred in preparing the range, targets, markers, j etc., the balance-sheet will show a ; very small debit balance -if any. > Should the secretary's optimistic view ; of the finances be correct, then he had and will have every reason for being | pleased, so that when the next Association meeting comes round he will be i able to start his arduous duties with a | light heart and cheerful countenance, j more particularly if he receives the ; same or more support from the in- ; habitants of the King Country, who so generously contributed to make j this meeting such a success. j
