A deadlock has occurred in the negotiations between representatives of the Australasian Steamship Owners' Federation and the Seamen's Union, regarding the new agreement. Sir James Mills, chairman. announced that the conference bad dissolved without any agreement having been arrived at. The Seamen's Union ■ lelegates submitted proposals which they could not think of accepting. They were not at liberty to say what the proposals were. The Employers' Federation suggested referring the case to the Arbitration Court. The present agreement expires on December 31st. AN OFFFICIAL STATEMENT. Received December 2], 9.45 a.m. Melbourne, This Day. An official statement regarding the deadlock over seamen's wages, declares if the Arbitration Court awarded an increase of wages the shipowners would undertake that such increase should be made retrospective from January next, and similarly if a reduction is made. The Federal Council of the Seamen's. Unions decides to-day what action is to be taken.
