LOCAL AND GENERAL NEWS.
The first sale to be held at Mangaroa will take place on Wednesday, 25th January, under the auspices of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co. Large entries have been received to date and further entries are solicited. By a slip of the pen—or pencil—we described Father Tigar as "in charge" of the R.C. community here in Te Kuiti. Father Tigar was here on a visit and temporarily only. Father Smiers is the priest in charge. We learn that Messrs Mackay and Jones have been appointed local agents for the Standard and Fire Insurance Company, and they are now prepared to take fire and marine risks, arrd also undertake employers' liabiity and personal accident business. Messrs Mackay and Jones advertise in this issue a block of brick buildings, producing a solid revenue, in exchange for King Country land. This should give some of our speculators a chance to realise some of the unearned increment we hear so much about. The King Country Rifle Association meeting, which was to have been held on December 28th and 29th has been postponed until December 30th and 31st. A meeting of Te Kuiti Men's Club will be held in the Congregational School room on Thursday, 22nd inst., , at 7.30 p.m. The resident members ; are requested to attend as the business ; is important.

The annual settlers' picnic at Paemako will be held as usual in Messrs Johnson's paddock, on Monday, 26th inst., when a hearty invitation is extended to all who can attend. Games of all descriptions wil: be indulged in, cricket, etc., and a real good day's sport is confidently anticipated. Another function that is being eagerly waited for is the Christma? Tree and social in the Pacmako School house on the evening of January 2nd. Tickets are already in circulation and are being readily disposed of, and as the object is a worthy one, to assist in purchasing a Manse site in Pio Pio, success is already assured. Our conntry friends certainly know how to provide recreation for the holidays. Mr C. B. Lever notifies that he ha 3 for sale a number of freehol 1 sections at nrices ranging from £25 per acre. This is an opportunity that those in search of land should readily avail themselves of. We are informed on reliable authority that there is every likelihood of a bridge being erected over the river at the end of Sheridan street. Should thi a report be correct the people living on the eastern side of the river will find themselves in a very much more convenient position than at the present time. We give a reminder of the Pio Pio picnic, which has been arSPbged by the ladies, on Boxing Day *m Mr Hattaway's paddock. A real good day's sport is promised to those that visit Pio Pio on Boxing Day. Visitors to Te Aroha will find excellent accommodation at "Taranaki House," recently taken over by Mrs Miller—this lady is well known in Taranaki having been for seventeen years in the Opunake district. '"Taranaki House" is therefore a very appropriate name, but it will be found a comfortable and pleasant home for New Zealanders all round. The Hamilton Bowling Club is holding two subscription tournaments on Monday, and Tuesday, 26th and 27th inst., on similar lines to those held last year, which were very popular. A few members from Whitiora, Te Awamutu and Te Kuiti clubs have been invited to join in, which should add to the keenness of the games. Those wishing to take part each day. must be at the green not later than 9.15 a.m., and hand in their names.
