The atmosphere was electric during the day and several small scenes occurred. The "Hansard" staff is worn out and reduced to taking notes instead of a verbatim report. The Electoral Amending Bill was passed. An attempt to avoid postal voting failed, the only important alteration being that Saturday' is abandoned as the polling day, the new provision being that any day can be fixed for the elections, but it must be a halfholiday. The Estimates were then taken, with frequent applications of the closure. Fair progress was made. Several members spoke in favour of increasing members' salaries. Mr McGowan said it was a surprise to him how country members managed to subsist on a paltry Jl'3oo a year. It had been suggested to introduce a Bill to increase the maount by £IOO or £2OO, or submit the matter to a referendum. He favoured the referendum. It could submit the question to Cabinet.
