BIG CRICKET.

FIRST TEST MATCH. By Telegraph.—l'ress Association.—Copyright Received December 9, 8.30 p.m. Sydney, Last Night. In the first test match against the South Africans, Australia have made 494 runs for the loss of six wickets. The weather was hot and clear and a gentle breeze was blowing. The wicket was like a billiard table. The attendance was good. C. Ilill won the toss and elected to bat, sending in V. Trumper and W. Bardsley. The former soon made it apparent that the bowling on such a wicket was not going to be troublesome and started to hit out, but Bardsley started more slowly. When the score had reached 52 Trumper waa thrown out. Hill followed, and the two left-handers made the bowling look exceedingly cheap. The second century took 108 minutes to compile. When at. 11l Bardsley gave a chance which Zulch missed. Bardsey scored his century in 119 minutes and Ilill his in OS minutes. When Bardsley was at 12<i Sherwell, apparently in desperation, gave Pearse the ball, which Bardsley tried to slog and clean bowled him. The retiring batsman had been in 150 minutes. He hit sixteen fourers, and the partnership, Bardsley-Hill, contributed 224. Gehrs, at 67 was bowled by Pearse by an ordinary straight ball. A few balls later the same bowler, who had never before been considered any class as a bowler, clean bowled Hill. Hill's innings lasted 202 minutes. He hit 18 fourers. Kelleway and Armstrong played out time.
