KAWHIA COUNTY COUNCIL.
♦ The annual meeting of the Kawhia County Council was held on 23rd November. Present —Crs Shaw, Elliott, Davies, Babbage, Noonan and Kearns.
On the motion of Cr Elliott, seconded by Cr Davies, Cr W. J. Shaw was unanimously re-elected chairman for the ensuing year. The ordinary meeting was held after the conclusion of the annual meeting. A letter was received from the Minister of Public Works, stating that the Kauri bridge had been repaired and widened so that dray traffic could now be taken across, and that the engineering plans for the completion of the widening of the portion of the road between the bridge and the Kawhia - Pironsgia road were nearly finished.
In connection with the erection of a bridge over the Mangaiti stream the Minister considered that this was not a matter of very urgent necessity as the stream had a good stone bottom and the ford was not difficult to negotiate.—lt was resolved to point out to the Minister that it is impossible tu cross sheep at this ford when the stream is fluoded.
The Minister informed the Council that the matter of the formation of the Mahoe road, a £ for £ subsidy for the Okupata road, and the formation of the Kinapaku-Waiharakee road, would receive his consideration. In reference to the petition of the settlers of the northern portion of the Matakowhai riding protesting against the proposal of the Raglan County Council to include this portion in the Raglan County, the Under-Secretary for Internal Affairs, stated that there is no power to alter the boundaries of counties except by agreement of the councils interested.
The superintendent of the State Guaranteed Advances Office ailvised the granting of provisional consent to a loan of £IOOO for harbour purposes.
The following tenders for road formation were let: —No. 1, KawhiaMarakopa river road, Eshelby and Swanson, £226; Nos. 2 and 3, Pirongia west road, H. Wade, £142 14s, No. 4, Pirongia west road, H. Wade, £l4B.
The committee appointed to arrange for the erection of a storage shed lor butter reported having let a contract for the work. —Action confirmed. The Council expressed its appreciation of the manner in which the district had been treated in the matter of Government votes placed on the Estimates, but resolved to suggest to the Minister the desirability of making provision for the erection ol' a bridge over the Toi stream on the Awaroa-Waiharakeke road. Surprise was expressed that there was no provision on the Estimates for the Okupata Pekanui road, in view of the fact that a petition had been presented to Parliament by the settlers interested in that road. The district road engineer was requested to expedite the construction of the Awaite, Mangatangi and Huaroa bridges, the contracts for which have been let some time.
It was decided to ask the Public Works Department to supply a list of the votes it was proposed to hand over to the Council for expenditure as the Council was now prepared to undertake the expenditure of grants as far as possible.
