"HIS MAJESTY'S PICTURES."
To the Editor
Sir,— Thinking to spend a pleasant evening last night, I dropped into the Town Hall where "His Majesty's Pictures" were to be screened. There was a fairly large audience, and though some considerable delay occurred in "gas-making," those present contented themselves by idling away the time in various manners, such as twiddling their thumbs, stamping their feet, or whistling. The pictures, if I may be excused for calling them such, were at last projected, or at least I was led to believe so from the vociferous applause with which "shadowy visions flitting upon the screen" were greeted. I could net conscientiously call them pictures, for I, though possessed of ordinary eyesight, was quite unable to discern the titles of the projections. Still, in spite of it all, the enthusiastic audience cheered, and whistled, and stamped, evidently determined to have a little fun somehow for their money. But, as I have often noticed before, Te Kuiti audiences always seem to applaud most when they are most dissatisfied. The whole cf the first part of the programme was a "frost." I, like a good many more, left at the interval, so am unable to say how the show concluded. The management have my sympathy, but must learn not to mislead the public in future. I don't think any really good company can say they have ever been badly treated in To Kuiti. Still, I cannot easily forget how I "did my bob hard." —I am, etc., PLAYGOER.
