King Country Chronicle Saturday, November 12, 1910. TOPICS OF THE DAY.
The ratepayers of Te Kuiti will be called upon to vote for or against the loan proposals on Thursday next. The Mayor and the Borough Council have, for several months past, been working out plans for comprehensive improvements to the town. After most ex-
haustive examination cf various schemes, and with singularly little real criticism offered on the plans adopted, the ratepayers are now asked to express their satisfaction with the programme of the Council, by giving a large and loyal vote in favour of the loan on Thursday. The office of Mayor or Councillor is a very thankless one if it is felt that ratepayers are indifferent or apathetic. A sweeping vote should endorse the action of cur local representatives, and encourage them to go forward, a3 quickly as possible, with the ambitious scheme they have set their hearts upon. We need not once again enlarge upon the necessity for the various works in prospect. Roads we must have; water is a vital necessity, if fires are to be checked; drainage 13 imperative to carry off surplus water, and to keep down epidemic disease; and lastly some cheap, efficient iiluminant, such as the air-gas investigated by the Mayor, is needed to light our main streets and provide household lighting, cooking, and heating. The £29,500 proposed to be spent will give us the cheapest and most satisfactory value for the outlay that it is possible to get. There are some 475 ratepayers on trie roll. An emphatic vote by a substantial number will cheer and encourage our representatives, and show confidence in them and their programme.
