One evidence of Ihe progress of the strawberry growing industry in Auckland is to be found in the increased number of boxes being turned out at the workshop of the Jubilee Institute for the Blind at Parnell. An order was given by the Waitemata Fruitgrowers' Association this year for the supply of 500,000 boxes, which is an I increase of 200,000 on last year's j order. Of the half million boxes ordered this year nearly .'300,000 have already been made. The work, which is keeping about 10 persons employed, is done by machinery. The kahikatea, from which the boxes are made, is cut into the required thickness and sizes at Messrs Ellis and Burnand's Otorohanga mills and thus reaches the Blind Institute ready for the stapling machines, which are operated by the blind ! workers with great deftness and ra- ! pidity. The institute is also supply- ! ing orders for boxes from Christi cliarch and Dunedin. The consumption of gas at the Cambridge municipal works continues to : show a steady increase. The inj creases for September and October ! last were 67,900 and 85,000 feet | respectively.
