King Country Chronicle Wednesday, November 2, 1910. LOCAL AND GENERAL NEWS.
Mr V. S. Hattaway wishes to notify tliH public that from Wednesday November 2nd, his carting teams will be running regularly from Tc Kuili to the back blocks. All orders entrusted to him will receive prompt attention.* Te Kuiti Bowling and Croquet Club hold their official opening on Thursday afternoon next at 2.30 o'clock. Given fine weather there will no doubt bo a large number of members and their friends present. The Ohura is developing apace. Messrs Broadfoot, Finlay and Metcalfe, solicitors, of Te Kuiti, have just opened a branch office at Mangaroa, where Mr G. Metcalfe will have charge of the business. Congratulations to our enterprising fellow-towns-men. With a couple of banks, one open and another to be opened soon, the prospects of the county are bright indeed. It only needs good metalled roads now and the cup is full! We learn that the first lot of
butter produced by the Pio Pio Dairy
Co., Ltd., gained 93J points, a result which speaks very highly for the new factory considering it is the first output of tho season. Manager and directors are all highly pleased with the result, and the supply is increasing rapidly. All the butter is being sent Home, but there should be a local demand for a first-class article such as this. Attention is drawn to an advertise-
ment appearing in this issue calling a meeting of all interested in the formation of a brass band in Te Kuiti. It is to be hoped that the meeting will be largely attended, as there is no doubt that a well trained bani is a decided acquisition to any town.
The re-appointment of Mr J. W. W. Seymour, J.P., to his old position on the Waikato-Maniapoto Native Land Board, has given great satisfaction. His general knowledge of tho district and his previous experience on the Board has fitted him as a most suitable man for the position. Mr Seymour has received about 80 letters and telegrams congratulating him on his reappointment to the Board. Mr H. E. Rowntrce, piano importer, wishes to notify the public of To Kuiti and surrounding districts that he will be staying at King's Hotel Grand for a week or two. Mr Rowntree.is prepared to supply pianon, either for cash or on tho time payment system. Those unable to call upon Mr Rowntree will find that letters addressed to him will receive prompt attention.
Inspector Burnside visited To Kuiti school on Monday, and is reporting on its overcrowded condition to the Education Board. The chairman of the School Committee states that the Inspector will favourably recommend the building of a new infant school department, with accommodation for 100 chifdren, and probably the use of a large marquee during the coming summer. He was astonished to see the school so overcrowded.
The Bowling Club social for Thursday night is unavoidably postponed owing to no musicians being available.
The word "trust" in Mr Pine's last letter should have been "treat." The context woul-d make this clear. Also. the word "of" should have followed the word "writes."
The members of Te Kuiti Chamber of Commerce are reminded that a meeting of the Chamber will be held in the "Chronicle" office on Friday evening next. As the business is of an important nature it is hoped that a large number will attend.
The "Taumarunui Press" has fallen into serious error in its comments on the Carter v. Geisler case. We do not wish to intervene in the matter, but the use of the expression "Ananias of Otangiwai" is neither good taste nor sound sense, as is conclusively proved by our Otangiwai and Matiere correspondents. The report of the case supplied us was absolutely correct.
We are indebted to Mr T. E. Foy for the following statistics of the rainfall at Te Kuiti during October, 1910:—October 3rd, .09; 4th, .86; sth, .87; 6th, .24; 12th, .85; 13th, .61; 14th, .38; 25th, .02; 26th, .70; 27tb, .17; 28th, .18; 31st, .81; total, 5.7S inches on 12 days.
The Melbourne Cup was run yesterday, and resulted as follows: —Comedy King 1, Trafalgar 2, Apple Pie 3, Pendil 4. The New Zoalanders, Artillerie and Lady Lucy were thus unplaced. The New Zealand Cup will be run on Saturday, and a great race is expected this year. Those doing best track work are Diaboio and Merriwa (in the Cup), and Equitas and Bliss (in the Stewards Handicap).
An advertisement appears in this issue notifying that a hairdressing and billiard saloon in Te Kuiti, can be leased. Full particulars may be obtained from Mr G. Prime, Ohutu, Taihape.
Tutu poisoning has been playing havoc amongst dairy herds and other classes of stock in the Hawera district. This is a very bad time for this poisonous weed, as it throws up a mass of tender shoots, thus making an "appetising dish" for the bovine.
A sculling match has been arranged between W. Webb (Wanganui) and H. Pearce (Sydney), for £2OO a-side and half the gate. The loser is to get £SO as expenses. The match will be rowed on the Wanganui river probably on Boxing Day.
Mr J. R. Graham sells on Saturday at his mart, Taupiri street, forward weaner pigs, fowls, tin chimney, general produce, 2 saddles, lot of furniture and sundries Next horse sale is on the 12th inst.
Our Pio Pio correspondent writes: — A runaway team caused a little excitement in the township on Thursday, and but for the plucky act of one of our local men might easily have ended seriously. An auction sale was in progress at the time which evidently startled the horses, causing them to career along the road to the imminent danger of several women and children. Mr Butcher rushed out of nis shop, clambourcd into the back of the waggon, and after several narrow escapes, soon brought the imimals to a standstill. An action like this is to be commended. —Another good billiard break was made here last week during a game, the much coveted century just being missed by four points. —Building operations will aeain be in full swing as soon as the road will allow of timber carting.
