CROWN TENANTS.
An interesting return relating to land has been presented to Parliament, on the motion of Mr Stallworthy, the member for Kaipara. It indicates what are the usual methods of selectors who obtain ordinary Crown lands. More than half of those who obtain sections transfer them. There were 2599 selectors in the year ended March 31st last, and the Crown land boards granted 1607 transfers. The position of Crown tenants in the various land districts in regard to their obligations to the State is succinctly set out in the following return: —Auckland, 5960 Crown tenants, 2539 not residing on section, 303 default residence conditions, 232 failure to improve; Hawke's Bay, 1586—468—61—42; Taranaki, 1661--174—23—39; Wellington, 3631 —508—72—84; Nelson, 2250—1686 —2l8 —175; Marlborough, 1106—675 —3—35; Westland, 1696—896—45 0; Canterbury, 3286—1128—24—152; ,Otago. 4068—523—41—15; Southland, 2232—623—8—14; totals, 27,476 Crown tenants, 9220 not residing on section, 79S default residence conditions, 788 failure to improve.
