Australasia was, in 1908, the third best customer of the United Kingdom, being only a little below Germany and very considerably ahead of France. The leading consumers of British exports in 1908 were:—British India and Ceylon £51,189,089, Germany £33,400,273, Australasia £31,709,418, France £22,321,424, United States £21,303,565, Argentina £16,420,579 Italy £15,028,191, Russia £12,684.528 Canada £12,243,960. The Rev. Enos Couch, of Shepherd's Bush. London, and his wife celebrated their diamond wedding recently. They were married on August 14th, 1850, and their descendants now number sixty-three including eight sons and four daughters, forty grandchildren, and eleven great-grandchildren. "I believe in marrying young," said Mr Couch, "because you get your children grown up before you are old. My 'baby' is now forty." A young man objected to serving on at jury at the Central Criminal Court, Sydney, for reasons which, while not good enough to satisfy the presiding Judge, were, at least, interesting. His name ' was William Edward Cotley, a builder, of Kensington. He objected to finding anyone "guilty," he said. He believed all men should have equal opportunities. People who had not the opportunities that other men had would naturally, he argued, do things that others might think wrong. "Why", said he, "if my brother were to do me the greatest harm imaginable, I wouldn't convict him." The Judge (Mr Acting Justice Fitzhardinge) didn't see the force of the argument. "You know very well," said he, "that a juryman must take an oath to give a verdict according to the evidence." The reluctant juryman admitted he knew that, but said he couldn't convict a man, all the same. His Honor was adamant; Mr Cotley was not excused.
