There are now six golf clubs in Belgium. Three is a growing demand for apples in China. The flower trade of London is estimated to amount to £SOOO a day. Scarborough Corporation have granted licenses for three rickshaws to ply for fares on the promenade. The French Minister of Marine has issued a series of regulations intended to exclude "apaches" from the Navy. At the railway stations in Russia books are kept in which passengers may enter any complaint they may wish to make. Mr C. W. Morse, the ice king, who is serving a term of imprisonment at Atlanta Prison, is reported to be seriously ill. Collections have been made at many bull-fights in Spain during the past few months, says Reuter, on behalf of the Bilbao strikers. It was stated at the Tower Bridge Police Court that one woman challenged another to fight "as woman to woman, and no hair-puUing." There is a proposal to build a pier at Ainsdale, near Southport, which would shorten the sea passage to the Isle of Man to 50 miles. The successive surpluses for last year in the finances of South Australia amount to £1,800,000, the whole of which has been devoted to redeeming the debts of the State. Edward Ashbee, an employee of the High Boom Brick Company, Tunbridge Wells, has carried 40,000,000 bricks, weighing 130,000 tons, on a wheelbarrow during the past thirty yeas. In the course of his work he has walked 55,000 miles. A great improvement has been made in the arraangement of the High Commissioner's offices. Since the reorganisation some months ago a portion of the shipping department has been hopelessly skied on about the fourth floor, an arrangement which has entailed a great deal of inconvenience and work. Advantage has now been taken of the vacation of some offices on-the first floor to secure them for New Zealand, and Mr Donne has now his emigration department all housed in one block, in a situation most convenient both for the public and for the other officials. It is a decided improvement, and should tend to increase the efficiency of the branch considerably. The Public Trustee recently forwarded to the postmaster at Hamilton £12,000 in exchange for debentures in connection with the Hamilton gasworks loan. The Mayor said it was most gratifying to be able to report that the loan was placed at par without costing the council one penny piece for brokerage, exchange, or anything of the kind. Lord Aberdeen, it is stated, is likely, before the end of the year, to resign the Irish Vice-Royalty, and gossip is busy as to his successor. Lord Beauchamp, Lord Pirie, and Lord Ashby St. Leger are among those mentioned.
