Pio Pio.
I am pleased to see that the householders are taking an interest in school matters. The meeting called by the school commissioners was well attended last Wednesday evening. Mr D. Hattaway was in the chair and explained that the object of the meeting was to hear a report from Mr Bevege in reference to school matters. Mr Bevege pointed ou the necessity for better school buildings and also the need of having a school district for Pio Pio, also that the householders would have the power to elect their own school committee. The district was increasing very fast, and that there were 41 children on the roll who were entitled to better treatment from the board in the shape of school buildings. After some discussion a committee consisting of Mr J. Smith, H. G. Andrews and D. Hattaway was appointed to draw up a petition and get it signed by the householders, asking the board to fix a school district to be called the Pio Pio school district. There was some discussion as to site, and it was finally decided to ask the Education Board to build the school between the 15 and 16 mile pegs, as that will be most central for the whole of the district. It was also decided to send Messrs G. J. Bevege and Mr D. Hattaway to Auckland to put the wants of the district before the Education Board at its next meeting, and it will not be their fault if they do not get all they ask for. It is to be hoped that the householders will keep the ball rolling until we get what we are greatly entitled to.
