Football. ! MARRIED v. SINGLE. The above match was played on Te Kuiti Domain on Saturday last. Unfortunately several of the men picked in both teams failed to put in an appearance. However, willing substitutes were found and the game started with full teams competing'. The married men proved to be much the heavier team, but lacked the condition shown by the "boys." The match started with three cheers for the "boys," responded to with three cheers for the "old men." For the first few minutes the benedicts were full of dash and looked like scoring. In the scrums they had it all their own way, but by degrees condition began to tell, and the "old men" were soon on the defence. In the first spell B. Clarke scored for the "boys," no goal resulting. Just before half-time J. Clarke scored, Dement registering a ■ goal. In the second spell Nikora scored for the "old men," and D. Grey kicked a goal from an easy position. A good and friendly game ended with the score 8 points to 5. Mr G. Elliot'", officiated as referee. MANIAPOTO RUGBY UNION. The selectors have picked the following team to represent Rlaniapoto v. The final Shield match of the season was played at Alexandra Park on Saturday, when Canterbury met Auckland, suffering defeat by 6 points to 4, after a game which roused the spectators to a high pitch of enthusiasm. The day was fine, and there was an attendance of about 8000, who had the privilege of witnessing one of the fastest and brightest games ever seen at Auckland. With only ten minutes to go, Auckland looked a beaten team, but then they gave further evidence of their staying abilities, and fairly snatched the game out of the fire, winning by 6 points to 4. Canterbury's [ score came from a potted goal by Doell, while tries were scored for Auckland by Harrison and Wylie. The first try was scored near the posts, and when O'Leary took the kick, which meant putting Auckland in the lead by one point or left them a point behind, one could have heard a pin drop, and the groan of anguish that went up when the ball went outside the posts will long be remembered. Shortly after Wylie scored, and this put the result beyond doubt, and so carried away were the crowd that they carried Wylie off the field shoulder high. Other inter-provincial matches resulted as follows:- -Wellington A 19, Otago 6; Manawatu 14, Horowhenua 11; Wairarapa 27, Bush Union 3; Wellington B 6, Marlborough 6. Northern Union Football. The Auckland touring team leaves Auckland on the 20th inst., playing their first match against the Wanganui representatives on the 22nd. Lusk (Christchurch) won the amateur championship of New Zealand at Christchurch, on Saturday, by defeating B. B. Wood, two up. The winner is a nephew of Major Lusk, of this town, and is well-known as an all-round sport. His win is all the more meritorious seeing that he has not the advantage in training that many of his opponents have. The professional championship was won by Herd (Napier), who beat Clements in the final round by 6 up and 5 to play. Hockey, Playing for the Challenge Shield, at Wellington, on Saturday, Auckland were defeated by the local representatives by 3 goals to 1. The ladies' championship tournament was concluded at Nelson on Saturday, and Hawke's Bay retain the honour of being the premier team of the colo'iy. They had 18 points to their credit, next in order coming Wairarapa with 15 and one match to play. Seeing that a win, which was a certainty for Wairarapa, could not alter the position of the Hawke's Bay rep 3., the game was not played. Wairarapa were the only team to go through the tournament without a loss, and they had the honour of beating the champions, but suffered in comparison by having to put up with three drawn games, which was exceeding hard luck for them, for had they only drawn twice, they would have had to play off with Hawke's Bay, which match must have caused a good deal of interest. This is the third occasion on which Wairarapa have been runners-up for the championship. Cricket.
