COUNTRY NEWS.

A Own Correspondents. -t Paemako. A mild and warm month has been experienced here, frosts being few and far between, while showers have been frequent. The absence of heavywinds has been the chief feature of the winter, and now that September has come the risk of damage from this cause will be considerably lessened. One result from the showery season is to be seen in the bad state of our roads. They are almost perfect in the fine weather, but after a brief spell of wet weather, combined with steady traffic, they are practically unfit for use as the road from here to Te Kuiti in places is anything but good, and the sooner something is done with the bog-holes the better for all who have got to travel on them. We are at all times pleased to welcome new settlers to our district. Messrs Wilson and Ross have taken over the late Mr N. J. Hunt's property, and Mr A. D. McCardle has bought out Mr L. Bayley's property, and I understand that Mr McCardle i 3 going to have a large area of bush down if possible. Mr R, T. Bailey, manager for Newton King, is having a large house erected. The carpenters are making good progress, and they hope to be finished in about a fortnight. There is a rumour that there is going to be a t large gathering of all his friends at the house-warming. Nearly all the settlers are getting - ground ready for ploughing, Messrs Watson and Johnston Bros., having a large area already turned over. A very enjoyable dance was held in the school room on Friday, 2nd inst., as a ladies' return to the bachelors. Notwithstanding the bad night and the horrible state of our roads, about forty couples came along to enjoy a good night's outing. The music was Al, being supplied by Messrs Pettigrew, Kilmartin, Hearn and Asplin Bros. Much praise is due to the ladies for their excellent supper which they provided. Songs were rendered during the evening by Messrs Pettigrew, Anthony and Hearn. The duties of j 'M.C. were carried out by Mr J. Kil- j martin in his usual first-class style. {
