Federal Government states that it is not disposed to spend the £50,000 required if Australia is to be adequately represented at the London pageant of Empire. SOUTH AUSTRALIA. RAILWAY STRIKE SPREADING. Received September 3, 12.15 a.m. Adelaide, Last Night. The strike is spreading. The balance of men employed on the railway construction work, and also employees at the Government quarry came out today, making 400 idle labourers. The union leaders state that if a settlement is not reached by Monday it is likely the repairers along the railways in the country will join. The Premier has left for a visit to the far north. Received September 3, 10.35 a.m. The strike continues. The deputation asked the Premier to nationalise the tramways. He replied that he would favourably consider it, if asked by the municipal bodies concerned. SUPPOSED NEW ZEALANDER KILLED. Received Septebmer 3, 10.35 a.m. Sydney, This Day. Ernest James, a supposed New Zealander, was killed at the Gilgindra sawmill, by a log rolling on him. N.S.W. ELECTIONS. Sydney, This Day. Mr Minahan, president of the Political Labour League, predicts a brilliant Labour victory, and says they will win over sixty seats. ISLAND STEAMER TAKES MYSTERIOUS LIST. Sydney, This Day. Early this morning the Island stcamer Makambo, on departing, suddenly assumed an alarming list to starboard. The taff-rail was level with Uk> \v' •" She returned to the wharf and passengers were ordered oil' and the cargo unloaded, though undamaged.
SUNSHINE'S GREAT LEAP. Melbourne, This Day. At the Melbourne Show Sunshine jumped six feet ten inches-—a record for the ground. MISTAKEN IDENTITY. Perth, This Day. A remarkable case of mistaken identity, the counterpart of the English Adolf Beck case, has just occurred. The victim bears the same name. On August Ist, Edwin Beck was sentenced to three months' on a charge of uttering a cheque, lie was able to prove that he was not the man wanted, and was liberated,to bo almost immediately re-arrested on a different charge of uttering a second cheque. The alleged offence happened while in gaol, lie is proceeding againßt the informant.
