For eome time past, it has been recognised that a very great, and probably quite unnecessary loss to dairy farmers through the cause stated is taking place, and from authoritative sources we learn that the computed loss to Taranaki alone is ,£50,000 annually. It is in work of this nature that the department becomes of real service to the settler, and it is to be hoped that every assistance will be given to the inspectors who are endeavouring to get at the real causes of the evil, and to teach farmers how to avoids them." At a recent meeting of the Taranaki executive of the Farmers' Union the following letter from the secretary of the Wellington Boys' Institute was considered: "Realising that it would be of benefit to the boys themselveß, and through them to the country at large, if more of the city boys would take up agricultural pursuits, the Institute authorities were endeavouring to interest the boys in farm work, and it. was hoped that some of them would take it up as a vocation. If the executive would forward lists of vacancies for boys on farms the Institute would endeavour to find suitable boys to take the places offering." The scheme was favourably commented on and the executive resolved to inform the Institute that the Hclieme would have the cxecuth e's sympathy j iiinl sport.
