BOROUGH COUNCIL.
A meeting of the above council was held in the borough office at 7.30 o'clock on Monday evening last. Present—llia Worship the Mayor (Mr James Boddie), Crs Stevens, Young, Somerville, King, Hardy, Lusk, and Julian. Leave of absence was granted to Cr Iletot.
Moved by Crs Somerville and Young that the rate due for current year bo collected as from October Ist, 1910.—" 41 Carried. In connection with the council's request that a Bubway be placod under the railway to connect To Kuiti eaßt and west, in place of the overhead bridge which the department proposed to erect, the Mayor stated that he had talked the matter over with the engineer in charge of the section who had informed him that a subway would not be foasiulo as it would be liable to Hood when the river was up, also the extra cost of lighting had to be considered, therefore his department con- I sidered that tho overhead bridge was the plan to adopt. The council's offer of £2O for fire alarm bell was not accepted. Mr S. Cleaver tendered his resignation as poundkeepcr and ranger for the borough. -Accepted, and it was decided that fresh applications be called for the position.
A reply was received from the general manager of railways, stating that the council's request to use the water supply at Te Kuiti railway station in cases of fire could not be granted, the reason given being that the department's supply is only sufficient for actual railway requirements, in addition to which the railway tanks were not considered high enough to give efficient pressure in case of fire. —Ob Somerville and Stevens moved that an approximate cost be obtained of the erection of a separate tank for purposes of fire prevention and also the cost of well-sinking for the same purposes, and that a sub-committee bo set up to make full investigations and report to next meeting.—Carried.
A letter was received from the Minister for Internal Affairs in connection with the payment of temporary town clerk.—On the motion of tho Mayor and Cr King, it "was resolved that the letter lie on the table.
The clerk reported that he had given instructions to have certain dead sheep buried and desired to have instructions as to what to charge the owners of said sheep for burial. —Left to the Works Committee with power to act.
Cr Lusk reported that the Works Committee had examined Tonga street with regard to diverting water flowing on road and also flooding property adjoining. The committee had in one case no recommendation to make, in another place where the water was flooding private property they recommend that the owner of the land bo assisted in running a drain through his property. —The matter was left in the. committee's hands to deal with. Crs Lusk and Somervillc moved that the balance of the temporary clerk's account be paid.—Carried.
