TARANAKI LAND BOARD.
The monthly meeting of the Taranaki and Board was held at New Plymouth on the 19th, the Commissioner of-Crown lands presiding. There were also present—Messrs Heslop, Rattenbury, M'Cluggage, and Kennedy. The following applications for land were received:—Section 2, block 5, Pouatu, 733 acres, G. W. Murray; section 8, block 11, Totoro, 422 acres, A. Scrivener; section 2, block 5, Taurakawa, 912 acres, E. McLaughlin; section 2, block 10, Upper Waitara, 526 acres, L. J. G. Hamilton; section 2, block 7, Mimi, 199£ acres, D. and J. Brosnan; section 1, block 5, Taurakawa, 904 acres, O. J. M'Gregor; section 2, block 9. Taurakawa, 1520 acres, W. and M. Rea; section 4a, block 1, Kapara, 15 acres, W. von Asch. The applications were approved. _ Transfers.—Transfers were dealt with as follows:—Jane McLeod to T. R. Wright, sections 24 and 25, block 16, Egmont, approved; Joseph Gibbs to Harry Lett, section 13, block 11, Mimi, approved; E. M. A. Leathern to W. H. Franks, section 34, block 11, Ngaere, approved; M. Carroll to D. R.. W., and E. T. Wright, section 17, block 3, Opunake, approved; T. G. Oldaker to W. and M. Rea, sections 9 and 10, block 5, Ngatirimu. Applicant waited on the board and stated that he understood the residence conditions had been fulfilled. It was resolved that the application be refused and that six months be granted in which to reside or transfer to someone who will do so. W. J. B. Dawbin to J. W. Gedge, section 18, block 3, Omona, approved provided residence complied with; Smith Bros, to Wm. Godkin, sections 15 and 17, block 4, Omona, and section 8, bluck 1, Tuarakawa, approved suuject to residence being complied with. The Freehold.—A. G. Barnard, sections 10, 21-24, 26, 30, 37, block 16, Opaku; H. Wells, section 23, bjock 4, Huiroa; E. Bray, section 16, block 9, [ Ngatirimu.—Approved.
Want of Roads.—J. P. Matson applied for remission of rent on section 3, block 3, Waro. —The board expressed its regret that it could not see its way to make a recommendation in the direction asked and also resolved to draw the attention of tht Minister for Lands to the matter which was one of many cases of distress and hardship that the selectors had to endure owing to want of reasonable access to their sectons.
School Site.—The Education Board applied for section 47, Whangamomona, to enlarge the present school site, section 26, block 1, Mahoe. —Not granted. "Thirds." —The following proposals for expenditure of "thirds" were received during the month: —Stratford County Council £145 19s 9d, Patea County Council £64 7s 2d, Clifton County Council £364 16s, Wairoa Road Board £l4 0s 9d, Matoroa Road Board £3 18s 4d, Patca East Road Board £ll 4s 4d, Moa Road Board £l2 15s 7d. —It was resolved that the proposals be approved provided the ranger's report is favourable. Ranger's Reports.—Mr . E. Tolme, Crown Lands Ranger, reported on the application of H. Street for exemption from residence on section 3, block 16, Ohura. Three months' extension granted, otherwise the land will be liable to forfeiture.—Mr H. T. Twiss, Crown Lands Ranger, reported that he had resumed possession of section 4, block 3, Upper Waitara, also section 8, block 15, Upper Waitara. The land is to be reoff ered under optional conditions Mr Twiss suggested that section 11, block 5, Mahoe, be included in forest
reserve. Agreed to.—He also reported on the application of the Clifton County Council for a site for a roadman's cottage at Tarata, and it was decided to recommend section 35 for the purpose. A report was also received from Mr Twiss on E. H. Gibson's application for section 111, block 7, Waitara, the board decided that the matter be left in the hands of the Commissioner.
Non-compliance. The following settlers had not complied with the conditions of residence or improvements: —J. Hunt, section 3, block 2, Opaku, non-residence. Decided to give notice of intention to forfeit.—M. Natzke, section 6, block 3, Mahoe, non-resi-dence. No further action, as selector is how on the section. —J. E. W. Henchman, section 60, block 4, Paritutu, non - residence. Three months' notice of intention to forfeit. —R. A. Carter, section 9, block 15, Aria, non-residence. Six months' notice to to reside or transfer to some eligible person who will reside.—W. and E. S. Meredith, sections 1 and 5, block 2, Ohura, nonresidence. Three months' extension granted.—B. Prior, section 5, block 7, Mahoe, deficient improvements. To be notified his interest is liable to forfeiture.—R. A. and J. E. Shewry, section 8, block 6, Pouatu, improvements. To be notified as in previous case. —M. L. Gaustad, section 5, block 12, Upper Waitara, improvements. Nine months, extension granted.—The board reconsidered the question of forfeiture of improved farm sections, and it was resolved that the interest of G. Parrott in section 1, block 7, Mapara, be forfeited absolutely, and the land be reallotted; that the forfeiture of J. Moore, C. Schon, and F. Hanwright be rescinded, and that the forfeitures of C. F. Benjamin and T. H. Robinson confirmed, if they are not now on the* ground. General. —The Commissioner was instructed to take proceedings against two selectors whose rent was in arrear, unless the amounts were paid within one month.—E. Tolme, Crown Lands Ranger, reported that C. Joyce could obtain access without being granted a piece of the township reserve, section 14, block 9, Ohura. The application was therefore refused. —Mr W. A. M'Cutchan waited on the board on behalf of his wife wtih regard to the disposal of land affected by the deviations of the Kohuratahi road, and asked for favourable consideration in the matter of the land desired to be obtained by her v also that the land be disposed of to her at the original price of that at present held by her. It was resolved that the portions of section 13, from which the reservation has been lifted, be disposed of to the holder of section 12, block 15, Pouatu, at the original price of that section, provided that the same be not less than £1 per acre, on terms of section 131 of the Land Act 1908. The Under Secretary of Lands wrote with reference to the occupation by W. A. Flavell of section 5, block 11, Opaku, an application having been made to transfer to W. H. Strange and R. J. Stevenson. The transfer was approved.—R. R. Tait applied for permission to reside in a house on the opposite side of the road as there was no building site on section 7, block 12, Opaku. Granted.—D. H. Willie applied for exemption from residence on section 6, block 11, Ohura. Six months' extension granted in which to reside or transfer to some eligible person.—E. Cammock's applicption for exemption from residence was granted.—J. Pederson was granted until November next in which to effect improvements on section 7, block 3, Upper Waitara.—N, B. Fryday was granted twelve months' extension of time in which to effect improvements on section 7, block 13, Ohura. —The Commissioner was empowered to deal with schedule of sections in Opaku block, Heao, S.D., recently surveyed by Mr W. Laing, district surveyor.—C. W. Doughi applied to surrender section 2, block 4, Mahoe. Accepted.—lt was resolved to arrange a sale of sections in Whangamomona township as soon as possible. —The applications on behalf of Mackinder and Agang and Lyon and Ryan for time to register transfers were granted.—The following improved farm settlers applied for their leases:—C. Curtis, section 4, block 13, Ohura; S. Samuels, section 11, block 2, Ohura. Resolved that the leases be issued accordingly.^ —J. O' Donovan applied for a piece of land in exchange for land cut off for road from section 4, block 2, Pouatu, Refused.—L. Doherty applied for a small piece of land at Makahu township, on which to build a store. Deferred until further particulars are received as to area required. —D. Finnigan applied for additional land to improve fencing line of section 10, block 6, Aria. Deferred for a report from ranger.
