Messrs Dalgety and Co., Ltd., Hamilton, report as follows: — We held our winter horse fair in the Hamilton Horse Bazaar on Wednesday and Thursday, June Ist and 2nd, when over 400 horses came forward many of which we regret to report had to be refused, The sale all through was a decided success and was remarkable for spirited and quick bidding, especially on the second day when some very good hacks and harness horses were submitted for sale, most of which were sold readily under the hammer. A special feature of this sale was that the vendors, not the buyers, were willing to let. their animals go at a fair market value which meant in a good many cases a pound or so more was reached. The draughts also sold well but were not of great quality with the exception of five or six first-class horses from the King Country and a few from outside districts. Unbroken animals were keenly sought after, and, although, as in all fairs, they were the first to be submitted for sale, bidding dragged a bit until things began to liven up, when the remaining lot sold at satisfactory prices. We. quote as follows: —Unbroken horsse —Light draughts 2 year old £ls, yearlings £6 10s~to £9 15s, foals £2, light horses £4 10s to £7, squibs £2 to £3 15s; broken horses —draughts £2B to £32 10s, lighter £22 5s to £27, aged horses £l2 10s to £l9 10s, half draughts £l4 to £l7 10s, milk cart horses £ls 10s to £23, good buggy horses £ls to £23 10s medium £lO 10s to £l3 10s, good hacks from £lO to £l9 10s, lighter sorts £6 10s to £9, squibs £1 10s to £3 15s.
We also held our usual stock sale in the Matamata pound yards on Wednesday, Bth inst., when we had a fair yarding of cattle comprising a nice choice line of 60 bullocks, also four or five lines of calves including two pens of well grown steer calves the rest were medium. The sale, although small, was satisfactory, and brisk bidding was the order of the day. We quote as follows: —Springers £5 10s to £6 7s 6d, yearlings £2 18s, calves, good £1 lis 6d to £1 18s 6d, calves, medium £1 6s 6d, calves, small~l6s, fat cows £3 10s to £4 12s 6d, breeding sows £2.
We report as under on our Westfield fat stock market: —Beef—Prime ox choice weights advanced and sold at equal to 23s per 1001b, and there was a sharp advance all round for good cattle. Veal was in short supply and sold at increased rates. Mutton — Sold at prices fully equal to last week's rates. Heavy wethers sold at up to 23s for extra good, 18s to 21s for good quality medium weights. Heavy ewes sold at up to 19s for very heavy ordinary 14s to 17s.
