LAND BOARD.

Monthly Meeting. The Land Board met on Tuesday, 'J|g7~Hii Commissioner (Mr F. Simpson) presiding. There were also present Messrs Heslop and M'Cluggage. Transfers: Transfers were dealt with as follows:—Hagenson and C. H. Scott to C. H. and R. Scott, section 2, block 3, Waro survey district. Resolved that the resolution of the previous meeting be rescinded, and that permission be given to trasnfer upon residence and all other conditions being sticrtly complied with forthwith.—D. and J. Wright to John Wright, section 6, block 6, Waro. Approved subject to verification as to residence.—Medcalf and Wray to S. Medcalf, sections 10 and 11, block 4, Ngatirimu. Approved subject to ranger's report being satisfactory.—T. M. Higgie to E. H. Slater, sections 1 and 5, block 9, Upper Waitara. Approved.—C. Houston to H. E. Johnson, section 100, block 8, Waimate, and section 4, block 9, Hawera. The parties waited on the board, and answered the questions put to them. The application was approved.—F. Whitehead to G. F. Weitzel, section . 90, block 4, Paritutu. Mr Weitzel

waited on the board, and answered I questions, after which the application | was approved.— J. Hart, junr., to D. J. Campbell, section 7, block 4, Opaku. Resolved that the board is unable to sanction the transfer until the conditions of residence are complied w jtb.—R. U. Harden to G. B. Knyvett, section 9, block 14, Mahoe. Deferred for further information.—J. H. Doar to C. H. Mackinder, section 10, block 3, Ohura. Approved subject to residential conditions being complied with. —G. Pruden to H. A. Wood, section 95, block 10, Ngaere. Approved. Sub-leases: Sub-leases were dealt with as follows:—John Muir, senr., to H. Anderson, sections 5 46, 48, block 1, Mahoe; section 50, block 1, Mahoe. Approved.—C. R. M'Cartie to R. A. and J. E. Shewry, section 8, block 6, Pouatu. Resolved the board sees no reason to alter its former decision. Freehold: The following selectors applied to convert the tenure of their holdings to freehold: —G. Pruden, section 95, block 10, Ngaere; A. Cornwall, section 8, block 15, Pouatu. The applications were agreed to. Leases: D. Beaton, section 8, block 13, Ohura; J. Pearce, section 26, block 14, Ohura; W. W. Goodfellow, section 27, block 13, Ohura; J. O'Brien, section 28, block 14, Ohura. Leases issued accordingly.

Appeal: A. E. E. Belcher appealed against the forfeiture of section 5, block 15, Upper Waitara, and applied to transfer to W. F. Dowman. It was resolved that the resolution of forfeiture he rescinded, and that the transfer be agreed to upon the understanding that the conditions of personal residence are complied with forthwith. Deficient improvements: H. McLaughlin, junr., wrote, explaining deficient improvements on section 8, block 3, Ohura, and asked that the transfer to T. Mackinder be reconsidered. Transfer agreed to. Non-compliance with conditions: The following selectors have not complied with conditions: —Mrs J. C. Harre, sections 6 and 7, block 11, Pouatu, deficient improvements. Selector stated that she is making arrangements to have 50 acres bush felled. Resolved to suspend action provided the improvements were put in hand by June Ist and completed by December Ist.—R. N. Wilson, section 7, block 2, Pouatu, deficient improvements. Selector states will do improvements this winter. Action deferred. —J. McLeod, section 12, block 15, Aria, nonresidence. Selector wrote stating that he had put both his wife's and his own section 7, block 7, Ohura, on the market. Resolved that the Superintendent of the Government Advances .Office be informed nf the former decision of the board and that the writer be informed that the board does not see its way to alter its decision. —E. S. von Sturmer, section 5, block 3, Waro, noiiTresidence, Resolved that selector must be resident in a bona

fide manner within six months or transfer.—Mr Tolme reported that the following three selectors though in the district were not residing properly on their sections:—J. Riddle, section 4, block 8, Aria; S. Williamson, section 6, block 3, Aria; J. H. Hearn, section A, block 10, Totoro. It was resolved to inform the Superintendent of the ' State Guaranteed Advances Office that the question of Corfeiture of these allotments will be considered. Thirds: The Ohura County Council submitted' proposals for expenditure of accrued thirds £734 10s 3d and for £402 19s Id subsidy to Ongarue bridge at Taumarunui. It was resolved that the proposals first mentioned be approved provided the ranger's report is favourable, and that the proposals for Ongarue bridge be deferred for further information.—With regard to the proposal that certain thirds be held over for payment of interest on loans to be raised fpr metalling, it was resolved

that the board could not entertain such a proposal until each of the sections concerned had reasonable road access. Refused: The report of the ranger (Mr Twiss) was read on the application of Rev. N. Hyde for the Primitive Methodist Church at Huiroa for a portion of section 30, block 9, Ngatirimu. ' It was resolved that the board does not see its way to grant the request. Miscellaneous: Tne following improved farm settlers appealed against the forfeiture of their holdings:—G. E. White, section 23, block 4, Totoro; A*. White, section 17, block 4, Totoro; R*. Johnson, section 2, block 3, Totoro; J. Longden, section 7, block 1, Tangitu; J. Morgans, section 16, block 1, Tangitu; E. S. Powell, section 33, block 1, Tangitu; C. Schaw, section 3, block 2, Tangitu; H. McNeight, sec- ■ tiori 5, block 1, Tangitu; J. J. Kenny, section 21, block 11, Mapara; W. M. Peacock, section 17, block 11, Mapara; T. H. Robinson, section 8, block 11, Mapara; G. Gomey, junr., section 18, block 12, Mapara; J. R. Gillespie, secblock 7, Mapara; J. Moore, section 20, block 11, Mapara; J. W. Orr, section 3, block, 7, Mapara; A. A. .Matthews, section 26, block 11, Mapara. feiture be rescinded. —The ranger reported that Mr Mackay was not in the settlement or on the road work and it was resolved that his interest in section 5, block 7, Mapara, be forfeited. —The Un3er-Secretary for Lands advised that the board was justified in issuing the lease of section 14, block 12, Aria, to Mrs Box, and the lease was issued accordingly. —The Clifton County Council applied for one acre in the township of Tarata to be set aside as a reserve for the purpose of erecting- a roadman's cottage. Consideration deferred for ranger's report. —J. McDonald renewed his application for part section 4, block 16, Ohura. A letter was also received from the Under-Secretary for Lands stating that there was no reason why part of the section should not be disposed of to the selector, and the balance vested in

the Wanganui River Trust. Consideration was deferred for ranger's report. —W. J. Parsons applied to lease closed pari of Clifton road, block" 10, Mimi. Left in the hands of the Commissioner to arrange with the Clifton County Council to reopen the roading if necessary.—H. T. Twiss, ranger, reported on section 12, block 99, Waitara West, and suggested that the upset rental be increased to £4 10s per annum. Report adopted and the land will be reoffered for lease for seven years.—A schedule was laid on the table of settlers in arrear with rent who have been notified of intention to forfeit. Resolved to inform those who have failed to pay their rent that the matter was before the board when it was decided that if the amounts owing are not paid within one month then- sections will be liable to forfeiture. —H. T. Twiss reported having resumed possession of section 1, block 5, Kapara; E. Tolme reported having resumed posesssion of sections 2, 5, and 6, block 11, Heao, and section 15, block 11, Aria. Reports were approved and the land will be reoffered for selection. —Mr Tolme reported on the inspection of seven holdings. Two settlers had not effected sufficient improvements and one, was not residing in accordance with requirements.—Mr Twiss reported on the inspection of fifty holdings. One" ha 3 not effected sufficient improvements, five were not residing as required and one was in default both for improvements and residence. Reports were adopted and those who have not complied with conditions will be communicated with.-^—The resident engineer of the Public Works Department, Stratford, applied "on behalf of one of the department's workmen to rent the cottage on sections 43 and 46, Huiakama. A lease was granted upon payment of a ground rent of £1 per annum.—E. A. Meredith assistant ranger, reported that D.' Mullins was resident on section 9, block 11, Totoro. The selector states that he cannot take his wife on the section until hs had a house built and the access was improved. Considered satisfactory.—Mr Meredith also reported that 31 Tangitu improved farm settlers had not yet arrived in the district.—G. V. Mortenson's explanation that he hoped to be settled on section 14, block 4, Totoro, by the end of the month was considered satisfactory.
