TE KUITI BOROUGH COUNCIL.
A meeting of the above Council was held in 'Mr Tammadge's " office, last evening. Present —His Worship the Mayor (Mr J. Boddie), Crs Lusk, Hardy, Somerville, Pepene Eketonc, King, Julian, and Young. Before the meeting commenced the Mayor read a resolution expressing the Council's regret at the death of King Edward, and extending sympathy to the Queen Mother. The resolution was carried in silence, the members standing. The clerk pro tern asked for instructions as to what was to be done with the £5 5s collected at the memorial service on Sunday last.
The Mayor said he thought this sum, though Bmall, might yet be put aside to form the nucleus of a fund to obtain a hospital in Te Kuiti, to bo named King Edward Hospital. Cr Lusk proposed that the amount in question bo set aside for the object outlined by the Mayor. Seconded by Cr Hardy and carried. A letter was received from the Taumarunui Chamber of Commerce, stating that they intended to hold a conference to discuss matters in connection with the urgent needs of the King Country as a whole. —Cr Hardy moved that a reply be forwarded the Council's approval of the proposal and tht the appointment of delegate bo deferred. Seconded by Cr Young and carried. On the motion of Crs King and Somerville, the appointment of a solicitor, engineer and sanitary inspector wa3 left over for a future meeting.
A request was received from Ohakune for information re the formation of a Borough, as they proposed to take that step and wished advice as to how to act in the matter.--It was resolved to refer the writer to Messrs Broadfoot and Finlay, who have carried out the initial steps in the formation of the Borough at Te Kuiti. Cr Hardy moved and Cr Somerville seconded that the following committees be set up:—Finance and legal, works, streets and roads, public pound, sanitation and fire prevention.—Carried.
The Mayor moved and Cr Julian seconded that the following be appointed upon the various committees: —Finance and legal, Crs Hardy, Stevens, Lusk and the Mayor; works committee, Crs Somerville, Young, Lusk and Julian; streets and roads, public pound, Crs Pepene, Hardy, Julian and Lusk; sanitation and fire prevention, Crs Somerville, Young, King and the Councillor to bo elected.
From 26 applicants Mr G. Derbyshire, of Te Kuiti, was appointed Town Clerk. The Union Bank of Australia was appointed the Council's bank. On the motion cf Crs Hardy and Julian, it was resolved that the cleik should write to the Public Works Department, asking that a £-acre sect'on be allotted to the Borough for a public pound from the Department's section in Te Kuiti.
The Mayor stated that ho had written to the Minister of Railways, asking him to break his journey at Te Kuiti, either on his way to or from Auckland, in order that ho might confer with the Council upon most important matters connected with the station, station fencen, cattle yards, etc. It was decided that the. worlds, streets and roadi and pound committees should meet without delay. •'■-»-•
