King Country Chronicle Saturday, May 14, 1910 A SERIOUS NEED.

The scarcity of dwelling houses in Te Kuiti is fast becoming a serious problem. Additions to the population are made daily and there is not a single cottage of any description to be had. The most miserable whares are eagerly snapped up, and competition is keen in the extreme for anything calling itself a house. An example came to notice the other day where five parties were after one small house in a day. There is a distinct opening for some enterprising builder who will produce a decent cottage of four or five rooms, to let at 12s a week. He could have scores of respectable tenants at a moment's notice. And if he were really enterprising he would put in, not only a bath room, but a copper and tubs. No one but the overworked housewife knows what unnecessary labour is caused by the false economy of neglecting to provide what should be regarded as bare necessities. Space, again, between houses, is a vital requisite, if children are to thrive and occupiers are to have any privacy at all. There are houses in Te Kuiti to-day which no self-respecting municipality would tolerate being built. Building by-laws are badly needed.
