Cockroaches are never wittingly slain by Chinamen. They consider sacred insects, and think it portends ill luck to step on them. As they nevey make any effort to exterminate them, the Chinese quarters are usually overrun with*-these pests. The edible dogs of China are known by their bluish black tongues. They never bark, and are very taciturn. Four million and a half are slaughtered annually to gratify the palates of the Celestials. In China hens are used for hatching fish The spawn is placed in eggshells, hermetically sealed, and the hen is induced to sit on them.
