PIO PIO.
Own Correspondent. : \ A slight sensation occurred here when Messrs Andrews and John son; the contractors roc the excavation of the new dairy factory site commenced their work. *Tne section was Gazetted under section 51 ci the Native Land Settlement Act, 1907, through the Pod offices of Messrs Broadioot and niay, and we all thought the transler was quite clear to the Natives in the district. A cheque had been sent last January to the Land Board, but the Natives did not get the money and judge the astonishment of the contractors when they found a number of Natives on the ground prepared to interfere if they went on with their work. One old lady took hold of a scythe in the hands of one of the contractors' men and in the struggle managed to cut her hand. P.C. Matthews appeared on the scene and peace was proclaimed after explanations had been given and received. There are rumours of legal proceedings to follow. The Natives are hardly to blame in their action and I think the directors, or the president of the Land Board should have notified them that the land had been sold.
