MANGAROA MEDICAL ASSOCIATION.
To the Editor. Sir,—My attention has been drawn to the report of a meeting of the Mangaroa Medical Association, which, to put it mildly, contains n few inaccuracies; and which had they related alone to the affairs of the above would have passed without comment from me. The blind egotism and parochial spirit of the very few who attended this meeting remind one of the "Three Tailors of Tooley Street" who spoke for the whole of the Empire. As a member of the Northern Ohura Medical Association I wish to protest against the statement of a committee man at the above meeting, that no doctor was in the district when he, among others, knew right well that a skilful well-qualified and very popular doctor had started practice at Matiere over a month before and, if further proof were needed I may say I have seen letters from this committee, asking for and acknowledging receipt of consent of my committee to a most satisfactory supply of medical aid to the vicinity of Mangaroa. Such a reception of the action of the Northern Ohura Medical Association in allowing their doctor a free hand to reduce his charges to the lowest point for the benefit of the Mangaroa people is to say the least, ungrateful; and shows an unenviable sense of appreciation. It certain, Sir, that Mangaroa will have to be more careful in the reports to public prints or the swampy nature of the township will be unduly blamed in the matter of raising "canards" and I think everyone is conversant with the famous French joke. At present medical aid to persons at Mangaroa cost little more than half of what it formerly cost a Matiere resident to call aid for the same distance. Seeing that my committee have made the terms as low as possible it is surely a poor return to ignore or slight the benefit conferred in a fair spirit.—l am,.etc., G. PHILLIPS. Matiere, 10th March, 1910.
