MANGAPEHI.
—_ 'Own Correspondent. Brisk play still continues to be the ■ • order of the day, or rather of the evening, on the local court, and many exciting contests take place. The standard of tennis locally is steadily rising, and the Club should be able to * enter some reliable representatives for the Easter tournament at Hamilton. Another tournament, a combined doubless, was held on the court last Saturday, and resulted in a win for Miss Johnson and Mr. B. Kayson. The games were decided on points, 41 up, " the limit couples receiving points ahead of scratch. Many close games resulted. The following are the results: —
The players were rehandicapped as they were drawn for each round. First round.—Miss N. Mayne and Mr. D. Seymour, received 15, defeated Miss M. Tomlinson and Mr. F. McCracken, scratch, 41 —33; Miss W. Johnson and B. W. Hayson, scr., de feated Messrs Fisher and Good all, v ec. 12, 41—31; Mrs. Fetch and J. C. Risfc, rec. 20, defeated Miss Tomlinson and H. Johnson, scr., 41—36. Second Round.—Mrs Petch and J. C. Rist, rec. 22, defeated Miss N. Mayne and D. Seymour, scr., 41 —34; Miss Johnson and B. W. Hayson bye. Final. —Miss Johnson and B. W. Hayson, scr., defeated Mrs Petch and J. C. Rist, rec. 30, 41—34. The Taumarunui tennis club has intimated its intention of sending a team to try conclusions with our players on Saturday, 26th. As the players for both sides are reported to be in good form, some excellent contests should result. I am told the locals would also much like to play a return match with Te Kuiti this season. The young men of this district have been busy lately preparing a piece of property lent by Mr. Mahuri fov a sports ground. A combined foot and horse race meeting is to be held on Saturday the sth. The ground would, with a little attention, also make an excellent football giound. If this is done, Mangapehi should be able to put a strong football team in the field this year, as the material here is good, practice being the only requisite.
A local branch of the United Ancient Order of Druids is being formed here. Mr Boyd, who is an old Palmerston North Druid, is pushing the matter along, and it is intended to hold the opening ceremony on Friday, March 4th, if possible. This should be a very successful undertaking, as men are always liable to meet with accidents in a sawmilling district, such as this is, and should therefore hasten to partake of the benefits of a friendly society. Dr. Fullerton examined and passed about a dozen members on Wednesday night, and has accepted the position of ledge surgeon.
The Belle Crome Company gave an entertainment in the Public Kail on Friday evening. A large and appreciative audience expressed their pleasure at the display given. It has been decided to form an amateur vaudeville society in this township, and about ten young people are rehearsing twice a week. The first concert will be held in about a month's time, and will be in aid of funds for improvements to the school grounds. A steady rainfall set in here on Thursday and has continued ever since. This will, no doubt, be appreciated by those whose gardens and water tanks are dry, but we are loth to exchange the dry roads of the last month or so for the quagmires that exist in their place in the wet season. Some very hot days have been experienced lately, it being 122 degrees in the sun on Wednesday.
