Pine's new quarter for music, painting, and infant school, begins on January 31st. —Advt.

The usual monthly meeting of the Te Kuiti School Committee will be held in the "Chronicle" Office on Monday evening next at 7.30 p.m.

Attention is drawn to the fact that in the Te Kuiti Brass Band races, Event No. 4 should read

ljmiles, not one mile as it appears on the posters.

Householders should note that Mr C. B. Lever will hold an unreserved sale of furniture on Friday next, ,the 4th February, on account of Mr W. Hayter, at his residence, Rora Street, Te Kuiti.

The Prime Minister informs Mr Jennings that the request of veterans desirous of visiting Wellington when Lord Kitchener arrives has been granted, and members should apply for railway passes through the secretary of the Veterans' Association.

Preparations are now in hand for holding a picnic and social in connection with the school. The function is to be held at the school house on February 25th, and residensts of Mairoa and surrounding districts will be welcomed.

The work of metalling the road leading to Aria township is now being pushed ahead and should be completed before winter. This will be a boon to settlers as the road in question was undoubtedly one of the worst in the district, and became absolutely dangerous in winter. The Kie Kie road between Aria and Waitewhena has a sinister reputation, kasfc November the "Chronicle" representative, travelling from Ohura to To Kuiti was infotm,ed that the }£ie Kie road was sis feet wjde an.d twejve feet deep. The other mental hospital in the Dominion will not be closed, but the central institution will be of an entirely different character, and will enable the authorities to deal with the important subject of the treatment of the mentally afflicted on lines which cannot be attempted in buildings of the present type. The idea of one big structure has been discarded and the Kihikihi institution will consist of a number of detached buildings, spread over a large area, on a site comprising seme 5000 acres, in which all the latest ideas on the subject can be put into operation. Some unavoidable delay has occurred in the steps necessary for setting aside the land, which mostly belongs to the Grown, but, it W anticipated that quite a reasonable degree oI ' accommodation Wii} be provided by the' time' that Mount yiew peaces''tp fte a home for the mentally ajfsict.ed, nnd tjiat thereSftep the work of construction wijl g,o steadily forward-' estab}isfim, ept jof receiving homps and the ppoyisjpn pf facilities for classification t are the pfrief epds sitpgd at by the &PP&fP~ prenf, and thje site selected at jg reported to b? admirably adapted for the purpose,
