CORRESPONDENCE.

Tq the Editor. Sir, —Considering all things, that have happened lately in regard to metalling roads, etc., and promises made only to be broken, Native land rating a dead Act, and our rpads so bad, and winter approaching, we are i ideeci in a desperate position. I have a suggestion to make, as a desperate position needs a desperate measure to combat it, and I suggest the County Councils interested erect toll gates on all the main roads leading to the railway; then the Councils can collect the very necessary funds to do something to the roads in this splendid King Country. The Native then will pay, and- everyone else contribute towards the cost' and maintenance of the . roads they use. It may seem a drastic means to raise revenue, but the only way I can see in the circumstances. We then are helping ourselves, and.will feel more independent, by not always sitting on the Government; doormat "as one is apt to get kicked (as we have been lately), not intentionally perhaps, but kicked all the same, and sneered at as well by W. 8., which is well deserved. Let the Council bestir itsel.c ?iad put up toll gateg befoye the bad weather is hevs; then they will have some funds to go on with next summer, and more traffic, which, means more I am, etc.; ■ T-OTORO.
