THE KING COUNTRY CHRONICLE. SATURDAY, JAN. 8, 1910 THE DAIRYING INDUSTRY.

EVER since the closing of the old dairy factory at Te Kuiti there have been rumours of a project for re* establishing the industry on cooperative lines, but up to the present no definite action has been taken in the matter. There are, however, quite a number of settlers within reach of Te Kuiti who would be prepared to support a factory, and it is to be hoped a strong effort will be made to get the settlers to join hands with a view to starting the industry on proper lines at an early date. As is pointed out by a correspondent in another column of this- issue, the conditions are eminently suitable for establishing a local factory; the area under grass has increased considerably during the past two or three years, and the various holdings are in permanent occupation. Probably one of the chief factors which operated to the detriment of dairying in the past was the increase in land values close to the. town, and the fact that the holders of sections did not wish to be tied down by a guarantee to milk. The first speculative wave, however, is now past, and the position; is practically reversed. The very fact of the industry" being established in the district, and the consequent additional returns will have the effect of further increasing land values, while the opportunity for progress will be immediately increased. Ft refer to the profits of dairying, which is acknowledged to be the steadiest and most lucrative branch of the farming industry. Te Kujti settlers will be well advised to take up the matter in earnest, and by so doing can look forward confidently to ljapid and material benefits, both in the mafcter of (Jiyect re-' turns, and increased values in land.
