Liberal support is forthcoming for the Settlers' Annual picnic at Piopio and a highly successfuul reunion is forecasted. Each year the population of the district is becoming greater and the efforts of those who strive to promote social intercourse should be highly appreciated. At a large meeting of licensed vituallers held at Wellington on Tuesday the matter of the agreement entered into by representatives of the Trade and the N.Z. The necessity of appointing a Coroner for the Te Kuiti district was recently brought before the authorities by theTe Kuiti Chamber of Commerce. The representations were made through Mr YV. T. Jennings, M.P., who has received a letter from the Minister of Justice stating that the matter will receive consideration.

During the present fishing season some very good catches have been made in the various streams of the district. On November 27th Mr F. Moorhouse fishing at Ongarue landed 17 trout, ranging from ljlb to 41 bs in weight. On December sth at Waimeha Mr Moorhouse got another fine basket in the shape of 21 trout, ranging from ljlb to 4Jlbs in weight the average being about 2 J lbs. It is gratifying to note that the fish were all in excellent condition, and gave fine sport. The trout were all caught on the fly, the teal and red, and gray drake being used. A narrow escape from a very serious accident occured on Monday morning at Piriaka. Mr P. Gavin and family left Taumarunui to drive to Kakahi, and when going up the Piriaka Hill the horse shied at a stone with the result that the party, except Mr Gavin, who jumped out, were precipitated over the bank, a drop of 40ft. The buggy was considerably damaged, and the back wheels smashed. A young lady with Mr and Mrs Gavin had her shoulder dislocated, and was stunned, and Mrs Gavin was badly bruised. The occupants were very lucky to get off so easily, as the buggy turned over three times before it reached the bottom of the gully.

In connection with the rating of Native lands the Te Kuiti Chamber oi Commerce recently wrote to Mr Jennings, M.P.. drawing attention to the fact that rating was not provided foi in the new Native Land Bill. The member for the district in reply saic the rating provisions would be included in an amendment to the Rating Act. As regards the time for dealing with the question Mr Jennings .said he was naturally deeply interested in the question, and was agitating to have the matter dealt with thirf session. There appears to be very little chance of the proposed visit of parliamentarians to Te Kuiti being carrier' into effect during this session, unless the House resumes in February, a.- ha? been suggested.
