PIOPIO.
Own Correspondent.
The potato blight has been working havoc in the district of late and several of the settler's crops have been badly struck with tbe pest. This is a serious enough matter for the settlers bat the effect on the Maoris will be particularly severe. The road which bad been improving rapidly until last week has got a set back in consequence of the recent heavy rain. This is rather a serious matter for the settlers as waggon traffic is yet impossible on account of several bad holes. It will probably he another fortnight before waggoning can be thought of. I understand the School Commissioners is working up a picnic for the children on December 171b. breaking.up day. A concert and dance is to be held in the evening and I understand a surprise packet will be unfolded. A very good report has been received from the School Inspector and school matters in general are on a satisfactory footing. I am also glad to hear that the Piopio Sateyards Company have been offered the freehold of the site upoii which they intend to erect saleyards: t* is wilt no doubt give general sa is faction. as some little difficulty has been experienced in connection with the obtaining of a site. The meeting of directors and shareholders of the Piopio Dairy Factory, which was called for tbe 21st ins?., was adjourned through the indisposition of the Chairman, and th?> adjourned meeting wilt be held at Paemako on the 28th inst.
I am pleased to be able to report that matters in connection with the dairy factory have advanced another step in so much that the Registration is now complete an I in future I will have to use the term Piopio Dairy Company. Limited, and the wish of your correspondent, and in fact the wish of the whole district is that the newly formed dairy company may have the success which it deserves.
I am pleased to hear that Mr O'Dwyer. has consented, after numerous requests, to stand as councillor for the Paemako Riding, and judging by the feeling generally expressed. Mr O'Dwyer's chance, should opposition be forthcoming, be a rosy one.
