Mr P' tf-r Howling. in. his speech at Newcastle, imilcad d tkat the miners would fight the coal ver.d by means of co-operative •-o'.'.c-rK-r. A general strike was not aimed at, but it was intended to set up a coal famine in Australia. Sydney, November 23. Mr Wade wrote to Mr Peter Bowling asking for a more definite statement of the proposals for an open conference in order that he might lay it before the proprietors. The strike congress drafted and forwarded a reply to Mr Wade. Members of the Federated Enginedrivers' Assoication have thrown in their lot with the strikers, and as a result the pumping machinery and fans in many mines are being kept going by managers and other officials. The general secretary of the enginedrivers sought admission to the strike congress, which, however, decided that it was inadvisable to include that union, since the congress wished to curtail rather than extend the area of the dispute. There are rumours that if Bowling's scheme to work two mines is put into operation there is a likelihood of the Federal Government taking action under the Commerce Act. The building trade is feeling the effects of the strike, and several brick yards have closed owing to want of coal. A number of large city buildings have been stopped. Some large firms, including Birt and Co.'s frozen meat stores, are replacing coal with oil fuel. After negotiations between the woolbrokers and the strike congress, the wool sales were resumed yesterday, on condition that the buyers were allowed to pay for their purchases when shipment was assured,no extra charges being levied for storage or insurance pending shipment. The catalogues totalled 41,000 bales, including 31,000 lying in Brisbane. Another sale was fixed for Thursday should strike devel.opmenti not render it inadvisable. THE CONGO ATROCITIES. London, November 20. A great demonstration was held at the Albert Hall, which was packed, to express Christian England's protest against the cruelties existing in the Congo. There were many bishops, peers, members of Parliament, and clergymen of all denominations present, the Archbishop of Canterbury presiding. The chairman emphasised Britain's share of the responsibility in the creating of the Congo Free State. Dr Clifford, the well known Baptist minister, in moving a resolution which was carried with enthusiasm in favqpr of complete reform in Congo administration strongly attacked King Leopold of Belgium's rapacity and brutality. Other speakers exonerated the Belgian nation, throwing the onus of the abuses upon King Leopold. The Rev. C. Silvester Home, a Congregational ist, described the Congo Natives as being done to death in order that European financiers might flourish and a millionaire libertine upon a thrown give rein to his passions. CANADIAN ESTIMATES. Ottawa, November 20. The Canadian Estimates total £25, 500,000, an increase of £3,000,000 on last year's. The sum of £600,000 has been allotted for the construction and maintenance of the ships for the Canadian navy and the upkeep of the dockyards at Esquimalt, on the Pacific coast, and Halifax on the Atlantic. STANDARD OIL COMPANY. New York, November 21. ! The United States Circuit Court of Appeal has ordered the Standard Oil Company of New Jersey to be dissolved as an illegal corporation. The Government's action was directed against the parent organisation and 70 subsidiary branches fo- conspiracy, and as a monopoly restraining trade in several States. The case is to go to the United States Supreme Court. The charges against 33 branches were dismissed. The judgment led to a selling movement on the New York Exchange, and Standard Oil certificates declined 12j points. This is stated to be one of the most important and far reaching decisions given in a civil action in the American Courts. GOVERNOR - GENERALSHIP. London, November 20.
