TAMMANY IN NEW YORK. New York, Novc-mhor .'J. There was great exicitement in New i York yesterday over the election of a j Mayor, in succession to Mr G. B. McClellan. The result was a triumph for Tammany Hall, whose nominee, Mr Justice Gaynor, was elected with a plurality of 60,000 over Mr Otto Eannard, the anti-Tammany party's candidate, Mr W. R. Hearst, the millionaire newspaper proprietor, who was a candidate for the Governorship in 1906, on the Independence League ticket, being third. The vote was below expectations. The indications are that Mr Justice Gaynor's colleagues have been defeated through the Hearst party's solid endorsement of Tammany's Republican opponents. The fusionists claim to have secured most of the minor offices, including a majority on the Board of Estimate and Apportionment, which authorises all the expedniture. He added that absurdity could not go further | than imagine that Canada would remain at peace with an enemy of the Empire. SENSATIONAL FRENCH TRIAL. London, November 3. The trial of Madame Steinheil for the murder of her husband and her stepmother, Madame Japy, in May of last year has commenced in Paris. Over two hundred people waited outside the door of the courthouse in a queue all night. Some sold their places for 500 francs in the morning.

GERMAN NAVY FRAUDS. Berlin, November 4. The trial is proceeding,of four officers from Ihe naval yards at Keil and five merchants of Kiel and Hamburg in connection with the frauds on the Navy Department, which, it has been stated, have caused a loss of £50,000 during recent years. All the officers denied that they were guilty. One of the Hamburg merchants implicated admitted that huge profits had been made at the expense of the Imperial Navy yard, owing to the confusion and mismanagement that had existed and the official ignorance of values and prices. Thus bronze and brass" were thrown together and sold at a common price, and dealers chose the best, leaving the rest to be auctioned. When this was done upset prices were fixed by the dealers, who arranged among themselves the materials each was to purchase, and did not bid against each other. THE BEEF TRUST. London, November 4. The "Times" states that importers are gratified at the success of the Marathon's meat venture.
