THEFTS AT TAUMARUNUI.
A man named Augustus Hunter Wheat ley. who has been occupying the position of porter at the Hotel Grand, Taomarurui, was arrested on Tuesday at Taumaxunui on a charge of stealing jewellery, money an stamps from persons staying at the hotel. The prisoner was charged, before Mr A. J. Whitafccr. J.P , with stealing property belonging to Mr C. J. Drummond.and was remanded for eight days being brought to town and lodged in the Auckland gaol in the meantime. It seems that the prisoner has made a practice of removing stamps from letters and postcards handed to him to post, for a large number of wrappers which had formerly contained communications—many of them addressed to friends at Home by the Commerce delegates who rceentiy passed throughhave been found. One of the letters found was addressed to Mr H. Hughe:*, patent agent, Auckland.
