WAIKATO NOTES.

(«l.vn iWro^WifHlcnl.) Spring hw cowe* in real earnest at last, and bright, pleasant days with plenty of sunshine are making the grass come on at a remarkably rapid rate. The prospects of the dairying season are excellent in Waikalo, and given the present good price* for butter on the London market, all should go well with Waikalo. The Waikalo I'oxing Association, a recently formed bo«ly here, is holding a tournament in the Town Halt, Hamilton, on Tuesday, the 2»Hh. Waikato championships for trophies will Ihcontested, nominations being called for bantam, feather, light, middle and heavy weights, open to bona-fide residents of Waikato. Thames Valley. Goldfietds, and King Country Districts. The programme also includes two events- light and middle weights - op»>n to amateurs resident anywhere in the Dominion, for trophies valued at £3 3s. Two noted professionals are also being matched for a ten round bout the same evening for a substantial purse. The movement is taking on well, some ->f our most prominent townsmen being connected with it, so that a successful tournament is practically assured. The Hamilton Oddfellows recently held a benefit social to help one of their members who had been unfortunate. A substantial purse was raised for presentation to him. The local Druids also recently paid out £l2O to the widow of the late Mr G. Smith, of Cambridge. Mr Smith had been a memlter of the lodge and this substantial sum accrued to the widow on his death. The Rechabites also lost a member by death recently and the onler paid his funeral expenses and other claim*. Dr Douglas of the Waikato Hospital and Mr J. E, Tidd, of Hamilton, were sworn in as Justices of the Peace at the Courthouse this week. These appointments give much needed additions to our local list. Indeed the common complaint in the country districts hereabouts is that more J's.P. could usefully be appointed.
