THE LIQUOR QUESTION.

Meeting at Kawhia. A largely attended meeting f>{ crsi- ■ dents, convened by the chairman of the Town Board, to protest against the action of th« No-tieensc part/with reference to licenses in the King Country, was held in the Town Board office, Kawhia, on Thursday night. Mr C. G. Jonathan, J. P.. presided, and referred to the notification in the Auckland papers of no-t'cense meetings on the subject. The following resolution was earned unanimously: "That this meeting protests against interference by non-residents with the legal rights of settlers in Kawhai or elsewhere in the King Conuntry to have, should they desire, licenses for the sale of liquor granted within this district, on the grounds: t - That the issue of a license or licenses for the Kawhia district is now justified by the largely increased European population; i that the votes of the electors recorded in the ballot bos should settle the question for or against licenses being granted in this as in other districts; 3—that in the case of Kawhia. as the law now stands, if it is legally right that a license or licenses can now be granted, then thta right should not be taken away through political or other influence being brought to bear on the executive or the licensing bench, but should be left to the properly constitoated authorities or the ballot box to den I with; 4—that as we are given to understand no agreement or compact was ever made between the natives and the Government to make the Rohe Putae a prohibited ana for an indefinite period, the time haa now come to have Che proclamation of prohibition rescinded."' A cesrhttieo advocating Slate control w>»* withdrawn as not coming within the scope of the meeting.
