WANTED: "ROADS AND BRIDGES."

To the Editor. Sir,—Yoor correspondent, "A Genuine Backbtecker." in yoor issue of September 27th, most have been suffering from a very bad liver or an overdo*? of mod. I find, on peromsing his letter that he not only finds fault with people for not writing with a carping spirit, such a» he is Ailed with, hot he strikes at car esteemed friend:" W. 8." whose sympathetic pen has always forcibly been osed on behalf of the pointer settler, and he follows in the same vein by blaming the Te Kuiti Chamber of Commerce, and myself: "Oor onetime energetic member.** It is difficult at times to sit down and write with an answer to such as yoor correspondent, who sees no good in anything that has been done the past twelve months. Sorely, if he is a man with an open mind at all be will admit that the Roads Department of the district has don© tome good work though "Jopiter Pluvius." with his watering can the past leven months has played havoc with the efforts pot forth to improve the road by Mr Julian and his assistants. Not only in the district in which «our correspondent resides, but all over the Notb Island, the incessant rains, for over six months, has had a very bad effect on road.*. If yoor correspondent cootd prevail on the "Angel Gabriel*' to inflence the before mentioned **Jopiter Plovios," from using bis watering can so frequently. I am sore the roads would improve very quickly. Now, in reference to your correspondent's suggestions about holding meetings to advocate the poshing on of roads mentioned by him, may I say that the recommendation a about roads in the district have been before the department the past three month*; and 1 hope that in the next month sums will be placed on the Supplementary Estimates to provide for any road that may have been not fully considered when the General Estimates were being prepared. In conclusion let me say your correspondent knew better when he said: "Our member had deserted as." If he has not forgotten he most know that I was in his district twice this year with Minister*, when the wants of the main road and others were placed before the Ministers; and due recognition of bis and the other settlers' statements wete recorded at the time, and have been considered. Why. then, this sodden outburst on the part of "A genuine Backblocker"? -I am, etc.. WM. T. JENNINGS, M.P. Te Kuiti, Oct. 3. WW.
