DISTRICT PARS.

Miss Pine's new quarter for music, painting and infant school begins on October 4th. —Advt. The Government has accepted the tender of Scott Bros., of Christchurch, for the construction of 10 four cylinder balanced railway engines of Class A. This is part of the construction policy inaugurated to meet the increasing requirements of railway business. The cost of the engines will probably exceed £40,000. Ten Class B engines will be put in hand at the Government shops at Addington, in addition to a similar number of side tank engines of the W.F. class suburban work. The Department also intends to build 600 L waggons of eight wheeled bogey type.

Mr supplied the following report at midday on Monday.—"A new big sun storm has just appeared, with two main nuclei of energy, and the entire solar disturbance is about eight-five thousand miles long. The earth is undergoing a severe strain, due not only to the abnormal condition of the sun, but also to interplanetial positions. The Sun, Jupiter, Mercury, and Venus are pulling on one side, and Mars and Saturn on the other, and lunar influence also operates. Mars will be nearest to the earth on the 24th inst. —distance only thirty-six million miles. Some extraneous force appears to be affecting the sun. My message sent last evening in confirmed, and electric conditipns may be also disturbed. Watch the cablegrams." Mr Clement Wragge advised on Tuesday The disturbance Creusa, named after the wife of Aeneas in Virgil's "Aeneid", is now more or less affecting the whole country, and in many parts will prove an old vixen. Nasty southerly to variable squalls will be experienceed, especially along the East Coast. Snow and sleet may be expected in the southern highlands, also more rain and probable fioodings."

The Minister for Public Health, the Hon. D. Buddo, told a reporter on Sunday that he was not able just-yet to make a public announcement in regard to the erorganisation of the Health Department, but he hoped to be able to do so soon. He coulu say, however, that the organisation of the Department was complete, and was working satisfactorily. The only thing that was not definitely decided was the specialisation scheme, under which the best possible results would be obtained from the servants of the staff. The various roads in the district are in an extremely bad state at present, the main thoroughfares in particular, in consequence of increased traffic, being probably worie than on any previous season. A Waitomo settler this week attempted to get a mob of fat sheep through to Hanagtiki for the purpose of entraining them to the Auckland market, but found the road for about four chains from the station in such a bad state that it was impossible to get through. The settler missed the market. The sheep are still paddocked within a few chains of the station, and will probably have to be taken back home again. Mr» Cross held her usual evening on Monday night last ana about 20 couples turned up. A very pleasant evening was spent, the floor being in perfect order, and the music of the best, was supplied by Mrs Morgan, Messrs Lever, Morgan and Cross. It is Mrs Cross's intention to hold monthly dances, and the first of the series will be held on Tuesday evening next, tickets being obtainable from Mr McColl, and the members of the committee.

Tenders are called for the removal of the Hangatiki Butchery Depot from its prespnt position to Mr H. I. Lever's section in Taupiri Street, Te Kuiti. At the meeting of the Waitomo County Council on Monday last it was stated that the section in Te Kuiti townshfp which the late County Chairman was securing for a County Office, was advertised to be put up for auction on October sth, together with several other sections. This was a misapprehension as the section in question is not included among those to be sold, and the arrangements begun will probably be satisfactorily concluded. The express train from Auckland to Wellington met with an accident on Tuesday which caused it to arrive in Wellington 3J hours late. Near Etau, shortly after six o'clock on the morning in question the side of a hill came down suddenly.over the rails, doubling up the cowcatcher of the engine under the_ train, and considerably damaging the mail van. Jacks were used to raise and straighten the cowcatcher, and after a delay of three hours the train got under way, and proceeded as : far an Marton, where it was found necessary to transfer the mails to another van, at the cost of half an hour's further delay. Anions the township sections to i-c offered at 'jV Kuiti on OetoKr ti oy the Maori Land Jjonrd is the e;.e on whi'-h the iinll stands. The imp:- ..reMr A . ( j. Holland will occupy the positi'of ; resident in place of Mr J. \Y. i;r<.i-, and Mr I'epenc Efcctouo will take a seat on the Uoaid in place of , Mr 11. Honiara. I
